If you want to get your driving license or simply renew it, you will need to prove that you are physically, mentally and psychologically fit.

The certificate is obtained during the medical consultation and is automatically available to the Institute of Mobility and Transport. Subsequently, the driver’s license renewal must be requested online or in person.

Documents and data required for the certificate:

  • National citizens: driving license, citizen’s card or identity card, SNS user number and tax number, restrictions (line 12 – column 12, on the back of the driving license);
  • Foreign customers living in Portugal: Driving license, passport or ID card, National Health Service user number and tax number. If you have a foreign driving license, you must bring it with you.

As provided for in the legislation, if the doctor deems it necessary, he or she may request additional diagnostic tests and/or a clinical assessment by another specialty, in particular after assessing the following parameters:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Locomotion
  • Neurological diseases and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
  • History of addiction to alcohol, drugs and medication
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Neurological diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Psychiatric disorders

If you have recently had any tests, you should bring this information to the consultation.
